A postpartum birthworker/doula is a support person that tends to the emotional, physical, spiritual and mental needs of a postpartum woman.

 At Xochitl Birthwork, we use the words birthworker/doula interchangeably.

In the old ways, postpartum women were taken care of by their grandmothers, mothers, tias (aunties), sisters and community. In today's world, where many women find themselves far away from their loved ones/their support team, or when these relationships are complicated, postpartum can be a challenging time when you feel you have to do it all alone.

During postpartum, the birthing woman is vulnerable and needs to be taken care of. In Traditional Mexican Medicine, it is believed that what we do during the first couple of weeks postpartum or what we call, "The Cuarentena,"  plays a role in our future health. The Cuarentena is a sacred time consisting of 40 days after birth in which the new mother is cared for by others, allowing her to get rest and heal to able to take care of her newborn. 

 As your postpartum Doula, I emphasize putting you, the mother, at the center of care. My offerings are focused on Traditonal Mexican Medicine and taking care of you through nutrition, rest and emotional support. At Xochitl Birthwork, I believe, if mother is cared for using these pillars as guidelines, a mother will feel more confident in their ability to take care of their baby.
